Red Lodge, Montana • Biker Bar • Gateway to Beartooth
"The most beautiful drive in America" - Charles Kuralt
Beartooth Highway typically opens late May and closes mid-October. Weather can close the pass at any time.
Local knowledge for tackling the Beartooth
Start early - morning light on the pass is magical and traffic is lighter
Check weather before you go - conditions change fast at 10,000+ feet
Fill up in Red Lodge - no gas stations on the pass
Take your time - this isn't a race, it's an experience
Stop at the overlooks - the views are worth every minute
Watch for wildlife - mountain goats and bears are common
After 68 miles of switchbacks and 10,000+ feet of elevation, you've earned this. The Antlers Burger is a half-pound of Montana beef, topped with bacon, cheddar, and all the fixings. It's been fueling riders since the highway opened.
Red Lodge has always been a gateway town - first for miners heading into the Beartooths, then for tourists discovering Yellowstone's back door. The Antlers has been here through it all, collecting antlers, stories, and road-weary travelers. When the Beartooth Highway opened in 1936, this place became a natural gathering point for anyone brave enough to ride those curves.
Walk in and you'll find a mix of leather-clad riders, local ranchers, and the occasional tourist who wandered in looking for directions. The walls are covered with antlers (obviously), old photos, and patches from motorcycle clubs that have passed through over the decades. The vibe is friendly but not forced - people are here to eat, drink, and swap stories about the road.
