The Beginning

Holmstead family opens a small saloon to serve trappers and settlers in the Ogden Valley.

THE DOLLAR BILL TRADITION

Every inch of wall space at The Shooting Star is covered with dollar bills - each one signed by a visitor and pinned to the wall. The tradition started during the Great Depression when a regular left a dollar on the wall "for his next drink." He never came back, but the tradition stuck.

Today, there are over 10,000 bills covering the walls and ceiling. Some date back to the 1940s. Finding your family's bill from a previous visit has become a rite of passage for returning visitors.

How to Add Your Dollar

  1. 1. Sign your name and date on a dollar bill
  2. 2. Ask the bartender for a thumbtack
  3. 3. Find an empty spot (good luck!)
  4. 4. Pin it up and take a photo

The Story

In 1879, when Utah was still a territory and Huntsville was a tiny settlement in the Ogden Valley, the Holmstead family opened a small saloon. They served trappers, settlers, and anyone else who wandered through. The bar has changed hands a few times since then, but it's never closed. Not during Prohibition (they served "near beer" and looked the other way), not during the Depression, not during any of the challenges that have shuttered lesser establishments.

What to Expect

Walking into The Shooting Star is like stepping into a time capsule. The original bar is still there, worn smooth by 145 years of elbows. Taxidermy covers the walls - deer, elk, a massive St. Bernard head named Buck who's been watching over the bar since the 1950s. The dollar bills are everywhere, thousands of them, each one a story. The lighting is dim, the floors creak, and the jukebox plays country classics.

Tips

  • Cash only - there's no ATM, so come prepared
  • The Star Burger is a must - don't leave without trying it
  • Bring a dollar bill to add to the wall
  • Ask about Buck the St. Bernard - there's a story there
  • Visit on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds
