THE FIRE OF 1980

On August 6, 1980, a fire swept through the Wort Hotel, threatening to destroy a Jackson landmark. As flames consumed the building, locals rushed in to save what they could. The silver dollars were pried from the burning bar top, one by one, and carried to safety.

When the hotel was rebuilt, every single silver dollar was polished and returned to its rightful place. The bar that stands today is a testament to Jackson's resilience and the community's dedication to preserving its history.

"We weren't going to let those dollars melt. They're part of Jackson."- Local firefighter, 1980

The Story

The Wort Hotel opened in 1941, built by Charles Wort and his son John. The Silver Dollar Bar was the centerpiece - a curved bar inlaid with 2,032 uncirculated 1921 Morgan silver dollars. In 1980, a fire nearly destroyed the hotel, but the bar survived. They pulled those silver dollars out of the ashes, polished them up, and put them right back where they belonged. That's Jackson for you - stubborn and resilient.

What to Expect

This isn't a dive in the traditional sense - it's more upscale than that. But it's got soul. The walls are covered with taxidermy - elk, moose, bison, and more. The lighting is warm, the leather seats are comfortable, and the bartenders know their craft. Yes, there will be tourists. Yes, prices are Jackson prices. But the atmosphere is genuine Western, and the whiskey selection is one of the best in the Tetons.

Tips

  • Go during off-peak hours to avoid the tourist rush
  • Sit at the bar to see those silver dollars up close
  • Ask about the fire of 1980 - it's a good story
  • Budget accordingly - this is Jackson Hole pricing
  • Check out the live music schedule - they have good acts
