Montana/Wyoming Border • 580 Miles • Elevation 10,947 ft
The Beartooth Highway is often called "the most beautiful drive in America" by the late Charles Kuralt, and for motorcyclists, it's nothing short of legendary. This 580-mile stretch of US Route 212 connects Red Lodge, Montana to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park.
Starting from Red Lodge at 5,555 feet, the highway climbs dramatically through a series of steep switchbacks, gaining over 5,000 feet in elevation. The road features 27 turns in just 3 miles as it ascends to the Beartooth Plateau. At the summit, you'll reach 10,947 feet - one of the highest paved roads in the Northern Rockies.
The alpine plateau offers breathtaking views of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains. You'll pass by pristine alpine lakes, snowfields that persist through summer, and tundra vegetation. Wildlife sightings are common - keep an eye out for mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and marmots.
The Beartooth Highway is typically open from late May through mid-October, weather permitting. July and August offer the most reliable conditions, though you should always be prepared for sudden weather changes at high elevation. Morning rides often provide the clearest views and lightest traffic.
